The eighth session featured a guest speaker—a lecturer from
another department who is experienced at generating and running successful
events. He imparted students with knowledge and anecdotes to help them
formulate their own ideas for the second assignment (running a successful
theme-night event for the university students). A group activity required the
students to consider different methods of generating new business ideas and
assess which ones could be used to come up with a plan for the second
assignment’s event.
The main aim of the session was to ensure students
understood what a solid business idea is and what drivers can be used to
generate business ideas. Another aim was
to have students brainstorm ideas with their groups for their proposed event,
to be held midway through the second semester. The session was designed around
having students think entrepreneurially by scanning their outside environment
to find new business ideas and opportunities.
While the students worked with their groups, it became clear
that they were still adjusting to working in much larger groups than they had
for the first assignment.
